L has been alive for centuries and wants to die SO bad. When he was 16, he witnessed an excecution of two children. They were twins which was seen as a curse in the village. Their hatred for humanity caused them to start a curse, their first victim was L.
Why exactly they chose him in particular or why they chose immortality is unknown, but at least they succeeded in causing more suffering. L doesnt feel enjoyment in almost anything anymore, thats why he came to Zion, the only scientist "stupid" enough to believe him and crazy enough to try and help.
